Dr Manuel Fernandez-Gotz
Dr Manuel Fernandez-Gotz is Reader and Head of Archaeology at the University of Edinburgh. He has worked extensively on Iron Age and Roman societies in Europe, opening up new perspectives on aspects such as Iron Age urbanisation processes, the archaeology of the Roman conquest, and the need for developing more inclusive approaches. He has directed fieldwork in Scotland, Spain, Germany, and Croatia. In 2016 he was awarded a Philip Leverhulme Prize, and in 2021 his research was recognised with the Royal Society of Edinburgh’s Thomas Reid Medal. He is currently PI of the Leverhulme Trust-funded project “Beyond Walls: Reassessing Iron Age and Roman Encounters in Northern Britain”.
Dr Chiara Bonacchi
Dr Chiara Bonacchi is Senior Lecturer in Heritage at the University of Stirling, and a leading expert in digital heritage, heritage and identity, and sustainable heritage interpretation and management. She has directed projects in the UK and overseas examining public perceptions and experience of the Iron Age, Roman and Medieval past, data science and digital co-production. She is co-founder of the award-winning “MicroPasts” heritage crowdsourcing initiative, CI of the “Ancient Identities in Modern Britain” AHRC grant (2016-19), and PI of the AHRC Follow-on project 'Co-producing Tolerant Futures through Ancient Identities (2022).
Dr Rebecca Jones
Dr Rebecca Jones is Head of Archaeology and World Heritage at Historic Environment Scotland and a Visiting Professor at Heriot-Watt University. Her book on ‘Roman Camps in Britain’ was awarded ‘Book of the Year’ at the Current Archaeology awards in 2013. Her research interests focus on Roman campaigns and occupations in northern Britain, including the Antonine Wall, and making archaeology more accessible. She is co-Chair of the International Congress of Roman Frontier Studies and developed Scotland’s first national Archaeology Strategy.
